Most lost keys turn up within a day, in a coat pocket or at the last place you sat down. The ones that do not are the reason the first hour matters.
Where should I actually look?
Retrace the last three stops, not the whole day. Call the places, ask for the counter or host, and leave your number. Check building lost-and-found with your doorman or super. The 86th St subway stations and the buses on Second Ave have lost property procedures too.
Who should I tell?
- Your super or management company, so they know a key may be floating around
- Your roommates or family with spares
- The garage or dog walker if they hold a copy
When is it time to rekey?
If the keys were with anything that shows your address, treat it as time. A rekey changes which key works the lock without changing the hardware, and it costs a lot less stress than wondering who found the ring.
FAQ
My keys have a high-security head stamped Do Not Duplicate. Am I safe?
Safer, not safe. Restricted blanks like Mul-T-Lock and Medeco can only be copied with the registered card. Standard keys with a stamped head can still be copied almost anywhere.
How do I schedule a rekey?
Send the request form with your address and what you need, and we will tell you honestly what the schedule looks like. Locksmith service runs around the clock.
